CALL FOR ARTISTS!
Material Matters:
With world-wide plastic production growing to more than 380 million tons this past year, researchers across the globe are looking for healthier, more sustainable material alternatives. In this material search, many have returned to natural plant fibers such as cotton, flax, hemp, and bamboo, as well as animal fibers like wool, silk, angora, and mohair.
In collaboration with the ϳԹ Office of Sustainability, the Print Media and Photography graduate students and faculty of the School of Art are curating an exhibition of natural fiber-based work created by ϳԹ students. This work, exhibited in the DI Hub Gallery, will include all disciplines and forms of fiber work including but not limited to artwork (including time-based media), clothing, textiles, science, architecture, engineering, functional objects, and video.
For the exhibition, we are considering all disciplines and forms of fiber work, including but not limited to, artwork (including time-based media), clothing, textiles, science, architecture, engineering, functional objects, and video.
We are also considering related presentations on fiber-based research, demonstrations, workshops, etc. These presentations could be in-person to happen throughout the exhibition, or documented via video to play throughout the duration of the exhibition.
Important Dates:
(2/19): Open Call for Work closes
(2/27): Email notification of Selected Work
(4/1): Drop-Off of Selected Work
(4/2): Installation

History of Earth Day at ϳԹ
Celebrating the anniversary of the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970. "More than 20 million Americans participated in one of the largest grassroots community service movements in our history during the first Earth Day in 1970. Earth Day is now celebrated every year by almost 1 billion people worldwide." -
In 1970, Earth Day founder U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea for a national teach-in day to focus on the environment. April 22, 1970, was the date selected because it fell between spring break and final exams. In April 1970, ϳԹ, along with other colleges and universities across the nation, participated in the national environmental teach-in known as "Earth Day." ϳԹ hosted a series of events on campus known as "Think Week" in 1970, including having Stewart Udall, former Secretary of Interior, and Ralph Nader, environmental advocate and consumer champion, speak on campus.
