Can I register for Summer classes if I’m not a ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø student?

Yes, to register for Summer classes you must first be admitted as a Guest Student.

To apply, visit our apply now page and choose the Post-undergraduate, Non-Degree Guest Student option from our drop-down menu.

Once you have received your ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø ID, you can follow these instructions on the Help Desk website to create a default password. 

 

Why am I getting a message saying I need to submit transcripts?

You may have applied as a Transfer Student rather than a Guest Student. 

Contact the Admissions Office at 1-330-672-2444 or 1-800-988-KENT for assistance. 

If I took classes at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø last summer or I applied and was accepted as an incoming freshman, but decided to go elsewhere, can I use the same FlashLine ID?

At this point, your registration window will no longer be active. You will need to go through the process of applying as a Guest Student. It's likely that you will be assigned the same FlashLine ID as the registration system will recognize that it has you on file. 

What if I’m accepted as a Guest Student then decide not to take classes? Is there a penalty?

There is no penalty. Guest Student admissions are temporary, one-semester admissions. 

If you do not register during that semester your admission status will become inactive and, if you wish to attend at a later date, you will need to complete the Guest Student application process again. 

I am an incoming freshman (starting Fall semester) and would like to take some Summer classes. Who do I need to contact?

Contact the Admissions Office and let them know you wish to change your start date from Fall to Summer. You may need to speak with your advisor as well. If you have not yet been assigned an advisor or participated in Destination ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, you can contact 330-672-2014 or newatksu@ksu.edu.

How many credit hours can I register for during Summer Sessions?

You can register for up to 12 undergraduate credit hours*.

If you wish to register for more than 12 credit hours, and are a:

  • ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø student: contact your advisor to request approval
  • Guest student: contact the Exploratory Advising Center at 330-672-3676 to request approval. 

*For the summer term, both undergraduate and graduate students are able to register for a maximum of 6 credit hours in a five-week summer session; maximum 10 hours in an eight-week summer session; maximum 10 hours in overlapping summer sessions; or maximum 12 hours for all summer sessions combined, including summer intersession.

What if the course I am interested in has a prerequisite?

You will need to contact the academic department and establish that you have met the prerequisite(s) at your home institution. If you simply try to register, without getting departmental approval, the registration system will block you from doing so as it can only see courses you have taken at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. We can provide you with departmental contact information.

What is the last day I can drop a class and still get a full refund?

The drop/refund dates are based on the dates of a particular class section. To see the drop/refund dates for a given class, select the Registration Deadlines link in the Schedule of Classes. 

For example: This will bring up the information on registration, drop, and refund deadlines for that section.

Online Classes

How do I access my online course?

Log into Canvas (canvas.kent.edu) or access your class via the "Canvas" button in .

How do I use Canvas?

Visit kent.edu/canvas/students to review helpful Canvas guides and resources.

Where can I find additional resources for online learning?

Additional resources for courses delivered online are available on Getting Started In Your Online Course.

How do I communicate with my professor?

Check with your  for instructions on communication from your professor. Check-in regularly to view updates. Unless otherwise instructed, Kent email will be the preferred means of communication. Check your syllabus or look for an email link in your Canvas course.

I only plan to take online classes. Can I apply as an online student?

If you simply want to take a class or classes online, you would follow the process described above for applying as a guest student. Then you will be free to select either face-to-face or online courses.

If I take an online course, will there be proctored exams?

Faculty now use a service that allows for online proctoring. You will need to check with the faculty member or academic department to be certain.

Costs / Financial Aid / Staff Benefits

What will it cost to take a class at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø this summer?

One of my parents is employed by ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. Will I be able to use his/her tuition benefits to take Summer classes?

Yes, assuming you and your parent meet the criteria for dependent tuition benefits. For more information on accessing tuition waiver benefits visit the University Benefits website or contact the Benefits Department at 330-672-3107 or benefits@kent.edu.

Can I get financial aid for Summer classes?

If you are a ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø student, you must submit your Financial Aid Enrollment Plans within the Scholarships & Financial Aid section in . 

If you are not a ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø student, you should contact the financial aid office at your home institution to determine if aid is available for courses taken at another institution. 

Can I use veteran’s benefits to cover the cost of Summer classes?

You may be eligible to do so. All questions regarding veteran's benefits should be directed to the Center for Adult and Veteran Services at 330-672-7933. 

Credit Transfers to Home Institution

Can you confirm that any credits I take at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø will transfer to my home institution?

You must check with your advisor or dean's office to determine if a particular course or courses will meet your degree requirements and the credits will be accepted. Once you complete a course at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, you will be able to request a transcript documenting your successful completion and the number of credit hours earned. But it is up to your home institution to determine if they will accept the credits.

My home institution needs to confirm that the credits for any classes I take at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø will transfer; can I get a sample syllabus to share with my advisor?

Yes, just let us know the course(s) and we will contact the department to request a syllabus. If the class you are interested in is offered by the Math Department, you may be able to on their website.
