We investigate mechanobiology processes at the single-molecular, molecular assembly, and cellular level. We use optical tweezers to reveal interactions between individual nucleic acid structures and motor proteins (e.g. polymerases) from mechanical perspectives. At the cellular level, we strive to probe the effect of molecular machineries such as protein aggregates and organelles on cell mechanics such as migrations and divisions.

We investigate cells in the brain that regulate gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons, the final output cells in a large neural network controlling fertility. Our research is focused on identifying changes in these networks that underlie the development of common forms of infertility, such as polycystic ovary syndrome.

We are a bioinformatics lab, studying patterns of RNA editing in the context of host-pathogen interactions, and how RNA editing changes in brain health and disease. We investigate microbiome-host interactions in the oral cavity, particularly in the setting of gum disease (one of the most prevalent inflammatory conditions worldwide) and comorbidities such as diabetes and oral cancer. We are specifically interested in how host diet and inflammation regulate microbe-microbe interactions within the oral microbiome and how these interactions in turn impact host fitness. Long-term, our goal is to translate our findings into more targeted microbiome-directed therapeutics.
