Developing Future Leaders in Student Life

The Student Life Fellows Institute is an initiative to foster leadership development within the Division of Student Life. The fifth cohort will place a stronger emphasis on the fellows' leadership journeys and self-awareness, with a focus on mindful leadership. Through this approach, participants will enhance their career trajectory, build a supportive community, and address common work-related challenges.

"We're developing the next generation of leaders in the Division of Student Life," said Kendra Wilson, director of the Office of the Senior Vice President.

Wilson, a member of the inaugural cohort in 2020, has since transitioned from participant to co-facilitator and now serves as the sole facilitator of the program. Originally launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide professional development opportunities, the program's success has ensured its continuation.

"I think it's one of our signature programs," Wilson shared. "The purpose of the Fellows Institute is to provide a practitioner-based perspective on the landscape of student life and higher education."

Wilson oversees the curriculum, implementation, and application process as the program's facilitator. Over the years, the curriculum has evolved based on feedback collected through assessments conducted after each cohort. Notably, the 2024-2025 cohort will benefit from new insights into Wilson's leadership journey, responding to previous participants' requests for her perspective.

A core component of the institute is the Build Your Professional Development Plan. In this exercise, each fellow begins with a self-assessment and charts their path forward, whether in higher education or a broader career context. "We ask that everyone comes with an open mind, ready to share their leadership journeys, experiences, and opportunities for growth," Wilson said.

Full-time professionals within the Division of Student Life are eligible for nomination, and self-nominations are also accepted. Throughout the academic year, fellows engage in one-on-one sessions with senior members of Student Life, during which they receive guidance, share their plans, and gain valuable insights into leadership within the division. The program concludes with a year-end celebration, during which fellows present their plans and reflect on their program experiences.

Sommer Dunlevy, assistant director of marketing at University Housing and Culinary Services, expressed her excitement about being nominated for the 2023-2024 cohort. "Being selected for the Student Life Fellows Institute is a great honor," Dunlevy said. "It reflects my commitment to personal and academic growth, and it's meaningful to know that others within the division recognize my dedication to enhancing student life and contributing positively to the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø community."

Dunlevy noted that her participation has given her valuable insight into the work of other division professionals and the qualities that define leadership. Last year's cohort featured participants from various departments, from new professionals to seasoned leaders, creating a dynamic environment for mutual learning.

"We had a powerful group last year," Wilson added. "I'm excited to meet the new cohort members. The Fellows Institute offers a unique opportunity to build relationships with colleagues across the division, some of whom I wouldn't normally interact with. It's a great way to develop rapport and foster collaboration."

The close on September 23, 2024.
