As the semester comes to a close, ϳԹ is asking faculty and staff to reduce campus energy consumption over winter break (Dec. 23-Jan. 2). As a result of collective efforts over the 2017 holiday break, the university avoided more than $25,000 in energy costs over nine days. The greenhouse gas emissions reduction was equal to taking more than 50 passenger vehicles off the road for one year.
Before leaving campus, computers and other electronics – including power strips – should be turned off and unplugged whenever possible. Most electronics still draw energy as long as they are plugged in even if they are turned off. Also, windows and shades should be closed, and any maintenance items should be reported.
Employees who have access to a thermostat are asked to set it to 68 degrees. Finally, as employees leave, they should check that lights are turned off.
As in previous years, University Facilities Management will be contributing to the energy conservation effort by setting back some building systems. By working together, the university community will reduce costs of heating, ventilation, lighting and plug loads on campus during the holiday schedule.
